For the past couple of years, my black history posts have given a nod to the past. But this year I want to look at the present. This day and age are not ideal for the black American. Just some events this week reminds me of just how far we have to go.

Sandra Bland should be turning 32 and Trayvon should be turning 24. So many black Americans unjustly killed have families left behind with thoughts of love, and those impacted by their stories have others left with anger.

Emotions are what make us human. Feelings are a part of life. And anger is a part of being black in America. Turning on the news requires a small prayer, and every election gives me anxiety. This is not a way to live. It makes me mad that politics in this country are more of a fight than a dialogue. At this point, it feels like a race to who can destroy this country faster.

Being black in this climate is dangerous. Every blue light, every siren, every suspicious glance. It feels like being a prisoner in my own skin. But I won’t let the anger of the times keep me trapped. My skin is radiant and glowing. I bask in its intimidation and appreciate its elasticity. It’s not impenetrable but the spirit that lives inside chose my resilient brown to skin to live in.

I’m black for life. So you can stay mad. My anger is justified but I will not use it to give satisfaction to those who hate my skin. I will use the anger as fuel to create a better tomorrow. Lord knows somebody needs to…
