We Shall Overcome Some Day: Maybe…

I have been trying my best to really digest what occurred on Tuesday November 8, 2016. This was a day that sent me on an emotional rollercoaster unlike any other “ride” I have been on this year. This election has been messy, disgraceful, divided, and hateful but yet I foolishly put hope into the American people. I foolishly believed that we would at least be able reach common ground. As I did when I sat in this same chair watching George Zimmerman go free, and Mike Brown’s mom cry in St. Louis; I write out of despair but not out of surprise.

That misplaced hope was a bad idea.

What’s done is done and now we are left asking ourselves, “where do we go from here?”. The anger and bitterness we feel, if anything, should ignite the flame that we allowed to go out once President Obama took office 8 years ago and again 4 years ago. It starts with us, each and every last one of us. I cannot preach enough that hospitality really does start at home.We have to start in our communities and then take our case to state level. Maybe after this wake-up we will listen to ourselves, our ancestors, and our history. Their voices and actions should be continued. We are fighting the same forces and evilness for which they dedicated their lives.

And just like them we are strong and resilient.

Whether you voted or were too “woke” not to exercise your right, this is your time to really push for the betterment of yourself, your family, and your people. No matter what your stance on the election was, I believe we all can agree that we can and need to do more. We did not want this election result to happen but we needed it and some people actually deserve it. So leave the long dramatic posts and arguments for social media and those who will be computer activists for the rest of their lives. I, for one, plan to put words into action. I cannot ever be a part of what has transpired this year again. I implore all of my family and friends to do the same.

We shall overcome someday. Make that day today and everyday. Step by step and little by little.  Be the change you wish to see in the world. Change yourselves for your mental and physical elves. Do not wait on the future.

Be the future.

Peace and Blessings songbirds.
